Developmental Milestones

Developmental Milestones

Developmental milestones refer to the continuous and predictable changes in your child as they grow. Usually these changes should be carefully observed and reviewed between birth and the end of adolescence at every visit. A developmental checklist is a helpful reference for parents to maintain close surveillance and make sure any developmental delay is identified in a timely manner.

Developmental milestones are categorized by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) as the following:

  • Social / Emotional
  • Language / Communication
  • Cognitive
  • Movement / Physical

The approximate ages that we assess your child are as follows:

Infants

Developmental Milestones:

Infants between birth and 1 year old take their first step, wave bye-bye, and smile for the first time. On the first year of life, children learn to explore, reach out for objects, and focus their vision. They also develop connections of love and trust with their parents or caregiver, which will be the basis of their social and emotional development in later years.

Food Choices:

There are diet requirements for the first year, which are important to know and follow. Breast milk is all your baby needs during the first 6 months. Between 6-12 months, you can slowly introduce new tastes and textures. Remember to introduce each new food item a week apart so you can trace allergic reactions, if any. Feeding is very important. You should feed your baby very slowly and patiently. Encourage them to try new food at their own pace. Don’t be forceful. Breast feeding may be challenging for some mothers. If you need help, call the National Breastfeeding Helpline at (800) 994-9662 or get help online at womenshealth.gov/breastfeeding. Your local WIC Program can also be a great resource.
